Football in Prague

By Szczepan Janus - Tour the Sport

Many of you are football fans and when you visit Czech's capital, you don't only think about beer and girls, but you also think about visiting some football temples.

Prague as one of the most touristic place in Europe has something more to offer apart from its great culture, architecture and night life that many of you would be probably interested in – football matches. With 4 teams in a top Czech league you could be almost sure that during a season there will be some game taking place. It is even more interesting as each of those teams has something unique to offer.

Sparta Prague – the most popular and famous team with a home ground at Letna Park located with walking distance from the city centre. Stadium is quite old and not impressive but you can feel the atmosphere of the past times over there. Sparta fans can guarantee good support for 90min often using pyro. Games are rarely sold out so you will easily get  tickets. You can buy them online in advance at www.ticketportal.cz . Print out versions available as well as option to collect them at one of the bookmakers shop around the Prague.

Slavia Prague – second biggest team in the city. They play at Eden Arena which is the biggest and most modern stadium in Czech. For some reason national team keep using old stadium of Sparta. Located in Vrsovice district with an easy access by tram or metro. Due to its size probably the only games that are sold out are derby against Sparta. For any other ones you will get the tickets on a match day on the gates or in advance via www.ticketportal.cz . Slavia fans are pretty chilled out, you can easily join their ultras sector behind the goal. When buying a ticket always buy the cheapest one, as once you are inside the stadium you can change the stand and seat wherever you want without being bothered by the security.

Bohemians 1905 Prague – just around the corner from Slavia ground you will find Dolicek stadium, home of Bohemians 1905 (be careful as there is another club at the north of Prague -  FK Bohemians with exactly the same logo. Currently playing in lower league). This is very unique ground with only one proper stand and surrounded by apartment houses. The club has probably one of the most crazy history in a football word so ensure to make some research before the game to find out why they have green… kangaroo in their logo! Behind the goal you will find ultras sector. Go there. Have a beer (1 EUR). Enjoy the smell of weed or have a smoke as most of the fans over there. Due to small capacity big games are often sold out. Apart from them you can easily buy a tickets at the gates or via www.ticketportal.cz .

Dukla Prague – at the north-west end of town, in Dejvice district you will find ‘Juliska’ stadium, home of Dukla. This is probably the most boring club in Prague, founded in communism era, owned by military and supported by the government – recently supported only by dozen of pensioners remembering probably 2nd World War. Atmosphere on the stadium is close to something what you can experience during mushrooms picking in the forest. However this is the place that you should consider to visit thanks to location of the ground. Built at the hillside it has definitely the best view over Prague along all the football grounds in the city. Tickets – something as online sale doesn’t exist. Just show up at the gates – you will always buy a ticket there.
